Michael Hance

Michael Hance has been the manager of the Scots Language Resource Centre in Perth since December 2002. For a number of years he was also director of the Saltire Society, an organisation which was founded in 1936 and campaigns for a better understanding of all aspects of Scotland's indigenous culture. Prior to that Hance worked as the Scottish Arts Council's parliamentary officer.

Michael Hance studied politics at the University of Edinburgh and spent some time as an exchange student in the University of Helsinki. He has a long standing interest in Nordic politics and culture and have been studying Norwegian for a number of years. Therefore he also speak some Finnish. Michael grew up in Aberdeen and presently lives in West Lothian.

Michael Hance comes to Fryslân because he is interested particularly in the development of language policy, the place of language in schools, the relationship between Frisian and Dutch, dialect diversity, the development of broadcasting services in Frisian and mechanisms for supporting and encouraging the language.

F. Xavier Vila i Moreno

F. Xavier Vila i Moreno is associate professor of the Catalan Language and Sociolinguistics. Next to it he is director of the research network Xarxa Cruscat (acronym for Competence, Representations and Use of Catalan) at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, and Secretary of the Centre Universitari de Sociolingüística i Comunicació (CUSC UB/PCB ). He obtained a degree in Catalan Philology (Universitat de Barcelona, 1989) and a PhD in Linguistics (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, 1996).

The research of F. Xavier Vila i Moreno, mostly focussed on the Catalan language area, deals with social plurilingualism and language contact phenomena; language policy and language planning, with a special attention to language in education planning; language demography (demo linguistics); and the analysis of language ideologies.

He has (co-)authored a number of books and articles. His most recent articles in English are:

  • Language, Educationa and Ideology in an Integrationist Society,
  • Language practices in bilingual schools: Some observed, quantitative data from Catalonia.
