In 2003 the Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning started with the European School Network project, a digital network for multilingual schools in minority language areas in the European Union. The mission is to create a platform for multilingual schools in minority regions within the European Union in order to facilitate the exchange of information and experiences.
 
The Network of schools is intended for all schools involved in pre-primary, primary and secondary education that actively utilize their minority language next to the national language in their education system. At the moment the network consists of more than 60 member schools from some 20 different language communities across Europe.
